The Undersea Voyager Project aims to inspire students to choose careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by providing them with 'Real Heroes' to learn from and emulate. Students will interact with our dedicated research team as they take on the trials and tribulations of scientific discovery. This will be an epic voyage to a world seldom seen and, until now, little explored - a hostile and sometimes dangerous environment - The Deep. Our students will be transported to The Age of Explorers as UVP circumnavigates the globe where they will share in the adventure of scientific first discoveries. This will be a journey from the realms of Jules Verne, Star Trek, and the imagination, to the reality of the creative disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). UVP will carry this sense of adventure and exploration back into the classroom and STEM disciplines.

Ancient explorers traveled as far as their technology or knowledge would permit and there they would annotate their charts: “beyond here there be dragons.” Our modern day student explorers will learn that today we face our own dragons that will also require new technology and knowledge to overcome. The Earth’s climate and oceans are changing at an alarming rate. The impacts to the biome are currently unknown. Key UVP science themes are global climate change, ocean pollution, and energy conservation, in addition to new species identification and biological ecosystems.

The legacy of the ancient explorers has not been lost. UVP will inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers to lead the way in solving these scientific challenges. A scientific research submersible will become our virtual undersea classroom. As pilots and aquanauts perform their experiments we will provide a virtual presence via live satellite link to and from classrooms around the world. Using the latest in audio, video, Internet and telecommunication technologies, the students will participate with the aquanauts and researchers. Schools from around the world will log onto our website and watch the latest videos of our aquanauts as new discoveries are being made. Students will submit their own experiments ranging from robotic inventions to environmental and species research. They will monitor the results and direct the aquanauts and researchers conducting their experiment. The Undersea Voyager Project connects submarine researchers with classrooms.

The goal of the Undersea Classroom is to inspire students by providing an unparalleled opportunity for virtual participation in underwater exploration and discovery. We will connect students and their teachers with live images of the aquanauts in the submersible as well as with video from multiple external cameras. Getting students and teachers involved through the Undersea Classroom will generate a desire to look at the oceans, space, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as positive pathways to successful, rewarding careers with the benefit of improving our planet.
